Chapter 9

Margot and Aldon sat in the empty interrogation room. It wasn’t because they were being interrogated or were under arrest. It was simply the easiest, most out-of-the-way place to hang out while they waited. Since Margot wasn’t well-liked by the majority of officers working in the department, it was also nice to be somewhere she wouldn’t be seen by everybody.

Radcliff’s new partner walked in carrying a pair of coffees in Styrofoam cups.

“Wexler,” she said as she handed Aldon one of the cups, “good to finally meet you.”

“Same,” Margot said as they shook hands.

Wexler was petite and attractive. Margot knew from Radcliff she was recently divorced. Radcliff didn’t want to believe it, but Margot was sure someone higher up had paired him with a young pretty single girl on purpose in hopes they would have a fling and he’d kick Margot to the curb.

“I would have brought you a coffee, but Radcliff said you don’t really drink it much.”

“No worries. He was correct about my coffee consumption.”

“Was it weird to be a cop who didn’t drink coffee?” she asked.

“I drank it more when I was a cop,” Margot explained.

Wexler sat down. “Radcliff should be here soon. He was talking to Organized Crime to see what he could learn about Bojan and the Serbs and how to play this. If they don’t know about this, it might be better for everybody if it stays that way awhile.”

“That ship might have sailed as soon as Radcliff went to Organized Crime.”

“Maybe. I know they had their problems, but they aren’t the same unit anymore. A lot of bad guys got weeded out, and I can say from experience, the people that replaced them are solid.”

“I guess I’m just a little cynical,” Margot said.

“I guess I can see why,” Wexler replied, “but there are people here who would say the same about you.”

“Yeah, and they wouldn’t be completely wrong—or at least, there was a time when they wouldn’t have been.”

“Yeah, it’s not like you have drinks with notorious mobsters like Harry Lee,” Wexler countered.

“Be nice ladies,” Aldon said.

“Sorry,” Wexler said in a way that didn’t make anyone believe she was. “I trust Radcliff with my life and if he trusts you with his, I suppose I trust you too. I also trust the cops I worked with in Organized Crime, even if you don’t.”

“If you say that unit is cleaned up, I have no reason not to believe you.”

“Good. Since we’re all friends now,” Wexler stated, “I can tell you Lecita and Camile swear they don’t know anything about Donovan and Lorilone’s adventure at the Silver Shores. We’ve still got them in rooms just like this one since Organized Crime will probably want to talk to them. If they can still stick to their story, we’ll have to assume they’re a dead end.”

“They didn’t remember anything?” Aldon asked.

“They remember them going and they remember Donovan coming back alone, but they didn’t think much of it since he told them she’d be working the Silver Shores for some big-time Eastern European gangsters.
